Asao Clematis was bred on Japan and is distinguished by the one - it blooms abundantly.
Culture belongs to early flowering species, and the flowering period begins in May-June. It is also worth noting that the Asao clematos is a repeated blooming plant, and the second wave falls on August-September.
Asao is a large-flowered clematis displaying abundant, large, bold and showy two-toned bright pink flowers up to 8 inches across with each petal having a wide white bar down its center. Flowers can be single or double with overlapping petals surround a prominent tuft of yellow anthers. Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators.
The peculiarity of the vegetative period is that the first wave sprouts on the shoots of last year, and the second wave on the shoots of the current one.
This clematis belongs to the group which blooms in early summer on short shoots developing from the last year's growth. Some flower again in late summer on new growth. These Clematis vines should be pruned in late winter or early spring before new growth starts and after the first flush of flowers in early summer.
The Asao clematis is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility.
Clematis Asao belongs to runing group 2: clematis in this group should be pruned lightly in late winter or early spring - in plants aged 1 year, all shoots are pruned at a height of about 30 cm; in plants over two years, all shoots are cut off at an altitude of 150 cm.
Pruning consists of removing weak and crossing shoots then thinning down the plant to a structure of evenly spaced one and two year old stems. Cut each old stem just above a pair of healthy buds.
An alternate method of pruning group 2 clematis is to prune only every three or four years. This will produce a weak first flush of flowers in the summer after pruning.
