Bob Hope Camellia Japonica Bob Hope camellia japonica, known as common camellia, or Japanese camellia, is a species of evergreen flowering shrub in the family Theaceae.

Growing 8 to 12 feet (2.5 - 3.5 m) tall and 6 to 10 feet (1.5 - 3 m) wide, depending on pruning, the Bob Hope Camellia can be grown as a large shrub or small tree.

Bob Hope produces beautiful large deep red semi double flowers on a bushy upright shrub. Bob Hope is a good candidate for pots in semi shaded situations, as a specimen garden plant or as a medium hedge. If planting Bob Hope as a hedge or screen it's recommend planting with a spacing of between 1.2 m to 2.0 m apart.

Suitable for growing in containers in small courtyards or entertaining areas. Plant with other traditional favourites like Azalea, Pieris and Helleborus.

Bob Hope camellia requires well drained moist ascid soil, clay(amended), sand(amended), silt or loam; requires low maintenance / care, except if you prefer pruning. Sun preferenses: morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun, all day filtered sun. But Bob Hope intolerances to direct afternoon sun and constantly soggy soil.

Also Bob Hope camellia can be grown as houseplant and used to make an amazing bonsai tree.

Since camelias blooming in winter - eraly/mid-spring, Camellia japonica have long been considered "roses of southern winter gardens" and with its gorgeous, very large, double flowers with wavy, deep red petals surrounding bright golden-yellow stamens, the Bob Hope Camellia won't disappoint. The rose-like flowers begin opening in late winter continuing through mid-spring. Even when not in bloom, the large, lustrous, evergreen, dark green leaves provide outstanding texture in the landscape. Excellent for cutting and use in indoor flower arrangements or just float one in a bowl of water.

As a Camellia species, Camelia japonica can be used to make tea, it contains caffeine and catechins.

A fine addition to red color theme gardens, camellia gardens, cottage gardens, and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors during winter by those who live and garden above USDA Zone 7a, where this camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy.
