Hesperaloe parviflora, also known as red yucca, hummingbird yucca, redflower false yucca and samandoque, is a plant that is native to Chihuahuan desert of west Texas east and south into central and south Texas and northeastern Mexico around Coahuila.
Red yucca has become popular in xeriscape landscape design for waterwise evergreen gardens in the Southwestern United States and California. The plant's qualities include drought tolerance, heat resistance, low maintenance needs, hummingbird attracting flowers, and an architectural form. Evergreen, compact growth habit with a very long bloom season.
Brakelights® Red Yucca is an improved cultivar of a Texas native closely related to Yucca but without the sharp spines. Unlike Yellow yucca the red one has a vibrant, brake light-red blooms are a great color improvement to this species.
This compact newer selection rarely sets seedpods, meaning more prolific flowering over an exceptionally long season.
Foliage of Brakelights® Red yucca reaches 2 ft (60 sm) tall and wide; blooms rise 2 to 3 ft (60 - 90 sm) taller. It has tough, narrow grass-like leaves with peeling hair like fibers on the edges. Brakelights® yucca is compact with dark red flowers that bloom repeatedly throughout the season. Excellent in containers, along walkways, in rock gardens and in harsh, difficult conditions. Well adapted to heat and drought, preferring full sun and well drained soil.
