Cardinal Wyszynski Clematis - is a grassy variety of clematis, bred in Poland. The length of the vine is 2-3 m, the diameter of the buds varies from 10 to 20 cm. The considerable petals have burgundy color, and their shade depends on the composition of the soil. In warmer climate the flowers last longer and have better color if they are partially shaded from the hottest afternoon sun.
This is a vine with high frost resistance, the hybrid differed from its brothers with unpretentiousness in the care and resistance to environmental influences. The clematis was called “Cardinal Vyshinsky” in honor of the Warsaw Metropolitan Stefan Vyshinsky, since the buds of clematis have the same color as the festive clothing of the Polish high priests.
The Cardinal Wyszynski Clematis vine is ideal for growing on fences, trellises, arches, mailbox pots, obelisks, poles, lamp posts and other structures. Tolerates to any soil Type but heavy clay should be amended to ensure good drainage.
This is early, large-flowered hybrid clematis that bloom in late spring or early summer and maybe again in late summer. Clematis in this group should be pruned lightly in late winter or early spring. Pruning consists of removing weak and crossing shoots then thinning down the plant to a structure of evenly spaced one and two year old stems.
Alternatively, you can often force a flush of new growth from the base by cutting the vine back to 18 inches immediately after the flush of bloom.
An alternate method of pruning group 2 clematis is to prune only every three or four years. This will produce a weak first flush of flowers in the summer after pruning.
