Matthiola longipetala, known as night-scented stock or evening stock (syns Cheiranthus longipetalus, Matthiola bicornis, Matthiola longipetala subsp. bicornis, and Matthiola oxyceras), is a species of ornamental plant. Native to Europe.
Matthiola gives an unforgettable aroma of summer nights therefore, it is often called a "night violet". Mattiola is pollinated by night insects, and so attracts them with the smell. In the afternoon, its flowers are closed and the smell is not noticeable.
Matthiola longipetala bicornis (Night-Scented Stock) is a sprawling annual with lance-shaped, gray-green leaves and delicate sprays of small, pale lilac to white flowers. The flowers open in the evening hours and release a most powerful and sweet fragrance. Blooming profusely over a long season extending from spring to fall, they are perfect for sunny borders, and patio containers, and can be harvested for use in cut floral arrangements - thanks to their long vase life (8 days).
Extremely easy to grow, this annual plant loves full sun and prefers neutral to slightly alkaline, well-draining soil. Propagate by seed sown in situ in spring, and repeated later for a succession of flowers. Virtually disease-free, keep an eye out for aphids, slugs, and snails.
This species is primarily grown for the evening scent. It is cold-resistant and grown throughout North America, even doing well into hardiness zone 1. This hardy annual prefers cool conditions in full sun and may not do well at high temperatures. It is best to plant thickly in clumps if a bushy appearance is desired. In Canada, the tiny seeds are usually sown in the early spring after the last frost and may be started indoors in April. They will bloom throughout the early summer and well into the summer if watered regularly. They should not be overwatered. They may also be grown in balcony containers although they will not usually stand upright and must not be allowed to become too hot and dry.
