Ocala Yellow Anise (Illicium parviflorum) is a very attractive large evergreen shrub or small tree with attractive light green leaves that release a pleasant fragrance reminiscent of root beer with a touch of licorice. In sun, the elliptical 5-inch long leaves will be lighter green and darker green in shade.
The hardy anise shrub is a large, upright, dense, evergreen shrub or small tree.
Ocala Anise flowers are inconspicuous, bell shaped, and a light buttery yelow. If allowed to grow on its own, the Ocala Anise will take on a pyramidal shape, but can easily be pruned into formal hedges or limbed up as a small multi-trunked tree.
Also, anise is a good nectar-bearing plant.
For medicinal purposes, anise fruits (seeds) are used (pharmaceutical name - Lat. Fructus Anisi vulgaris). These berries/pods has reddish brown color. They are harvested during ripening, when the fruits of the first umbrellas are browned, and the fruits of the remaining umbrellas are still green.
The smell of anise expels insects: lice, bedbugs, moths, cockroaches, bumblebees, as well as ticks. It is also one of the most popular attractions in amateur and sport fishing. The smell of anise attracts many non-monstrous and omnivorous fish.
Anise (Pimpinella anisum) is non-toxic when consumed as aromatic spice or in natural medicine treatments, at recommended doses. But anise green leaf makes cats hyper.
Anise is considered a safe food by FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) - it includes these seeds on the list of safe foods GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe).
Ocala Yellow Anise is useful in the landscape as a specimen shrub or small tree, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sunny or shady areas of the garden. Better success growing this Anise in locations that provide some afternoon shade in organically rich, moist but well-drained soils.
Also ideal for use in home foundation plantings to frame corners or as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) between widely-spaced windows or on windowless walls.
Maintenance on anise is minimal except for a snipping here or there of a stray branch. Plants can be clipped/trimmed to control height or to maintain as a hedge.
