Pride of Augusta Double Flowering Carolina Jasmine Pride of Augusta Double Flowering Carolina Jasmine (botanical name Gelsemium sempervirens) is a twining evergreen vine in the family Gelsemiaceae, native to subtropical and tropical America: Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico, and southeastern and south-central United States. It has a number of common names including yellow jessamine or jasmine, Carolina jasmine or jessamine but but unlike them it has bright yellow double flowers.

Despite its common name, the species is not a "true jasmine" and not of the genus Jasminum. That's why is is very deer resistant due to its toxic nature, but note that it is also toxic to humans.

 

Early spring blooms are an excellent early food source for pollinators. Suitable for trellis, arbor, fences and walls, pergolas, or as a groundcover. It is evergreen in USDA Zone 7b but may be semi-evergreen to deciduous in zones further north, and semi-evergreen to evergreen in mild-winter regions.

 

Pride of Augusta vine is a rare and unique double-flowered version of the famous and ever-popular Carolina Jessamine, Pride of Augusta vessamine produces loads of yellow, wonderfully fragrant, trumpet-shape flowers that cover the vines from late winter into spring with some flowering in fall. 'Pride of Augusta' Carolina jessamine creates a warm welcome for spring and other visitors, with ruffled double blooms that offer something a little extra special over the native variety. Left untrained, it can reach heights of 20 feet, but is easily kept to a trellis, arbor, or pergola.

Since Yellow Carolina jasmine is not "true jasmine", but of the genius Gelsemium sempervirens - it's a poisonous plant. All parts of this plant contain the toxic strychnine-related alkaloids gelsemine and gelseminine and should not be consumed.
