Red Gnome Dogwood (Cornus alba Regnzam), also known as the red-barked dogwood, white or Siberian dogwood, Tartarian dogwood, red twig dogwood, is a species of flowering plant in the family Cornaceae, native to Siberia, northern China and Korea. It is a large deciduous surculose (suckering) shrub that can be grown as a small tree.
As a popular ornamental used in landscaping its notable features include the red stems in fall (autumn) through late winter, bright winter bark; and the variegated foliage in some cultivars.
Red twig dogwood shrub is most commonly grown for the brightly colored branches that lend multi-season and winter interest in the landscape.
The upright branches come in colors of red, yellow, orange and coral, becoming more vivid during winter months after the leaves have dropped. Foliage of Cornus alba Regnzam is green, gold or variegated, with some varieties producing fall color. White flowers occurring in spring and summer are followed by white, pearl-like berries berries that provide food for songbirds and other wildlife.
Red Gnome is a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces or in groupings or as a colorful hedge in larger spaces. A four-season beauty that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow.
Stem color is more vivid when planted in a site that gets at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sun. Red-barked dogwood, (Siberian/Tartarian dogwood) is tolerate a consistently moist soil it is perfect for those areas where the soil just doesn't want to dry out.
The Red Gnome dogwood requires very low maintenance / care if left to grow naturally. Although pruning/trimming is not necessary, many gardeners choose to remove about 25 percent of the oldest stems in late winter or early spring of each year to encourage growth of new stems which will display the brightest red color the next winter season.
Alternatively, every 2 to 3 years all stems can be cut back to 8 inches (25sm) above the ground for total renewal.
The Cornus alba yellow flowers produced in very early spring are similar to Forsythia and are followed by white fruit which is edible and partially hidden by the foliage.
