Winterthur WinterHazel or Corylopsis Winterthur or Corylopsis spicata (winter hazel) is a plant in the witch hazel family, Hamamelidaceae. It is a deciduous flowering shrub or small tree with alternate, simple leaves, on thin, flexible, horizontal stems. Winterthur Winter-Hazel ia a hybrid of unknown parentage, very attractove for bumblebees and bees.
The fragrant yellow flowers in 2-inch long racemes that dangle downwards from bare branches in late winter to early spring. While there are distinct differences among the winterhazels, there are also great similarities, so similar that 33 different species have recently been condensed into seven.
Winterthur Winter hazel growing to about six feet tall and eight to 10 feet wide, Winterthur's leaves are handsome and a rich green in summer that turns to an attractive clear yellow in fall.
The habit of Corylopsis is as wide or wider than tall, so plants need greater spacing than typically provided most shrubs. Fewer plants cover the same space–eco-friendly as well as econo-friendly.
Winterhazels are easy to grow. They do fine in full sun to part shade, and will grow in full shade though with some loss of flowering. They are effective when used as understory shrubs to high canopy trees. Winterthur Winterhazel prefers an organically rich, acidic, consistently moist soil, but not standing water.
